About Real Time Embedded

Helping engineers build safer, more reliable embedded systems through expert C and C++ training, memory safety and low-level software analysis.

After decades of experience across low level software, systems engineering, and reverse engineering, I saw the same problems appear again and again: memory errors, fragile codebases, and teams struggling to reason about complex C and C++ systems.

I place strong emphasis on knowledge transfer. Over the years I’ve taught hundreds of engineers, helping them move beyond basic level learning to gain a genuine understanding they can apply in practice. My goal is simple: to help engineers design, build, and analyse secure, reliable systems with confidence.

Your Instructor, Dr Glenn Coates

Every course is taught by Dr Glenn Coates, a practising software engineer, technical leader, educator and member of the ISO C Standards Committee (WG14). Since 2019, he has taught hundreds of engineers to program effectively in C and C++.

Glenn’s career spans decades of low-level software engineering across a broad range of sectors, including scientific instruments, the UK defence industry and mobile phone platforms. His work has included developing JIT compilers and virtual machines at a world-leading processor IP company, and working on a hardware Java microprocessor. Alongside hands-on engineering, he provides technical leadership, shaping engineering strategy and direction.

He holds a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science, an MPhil in Real-Time Systems and a PhD in Microprocessor Design, focusing on instruction set architecture, performance and power efficiency.

As an expert representing the British Standards Institution (BSI) on WG14, Glenn helps shape the future of the C programming language, particularly in areas such as undefined behaviour and memory safety. His courses are fully up to date with the latest C standards, including C23, and benefit from first-hand insight into the reasoning behind them and the developments still to come.
